Water Effects

Here it is!! A simply and detailed way to make water effects for dioramas and machines. Plenty useful for river crossings, beach landings and deep puddles.

WATER EFFECTS

Water effects are something extremely "living" and variable, so, first you need a good documentation with videos and pictures.

Second, we recomended make the effects out of the diorama or vehicle, then put in and a final decoration integrating he whole outfit.

Splatters

Take cotton and Vallejo´s Water Effects to make the splatters. Cotton will form the foam "seams", enveloped with layers of Vallejo´s Water Effects.

Take a cotton piece and stretch out with your fingers.

On a smooth surface (p.e. palstic, pane...) soak the cotton with Vallejo's Still Water form the continer carefully. Or not, depending of the splatter tickness you want.

Mixture redistribution.

Let the misture dry, at least 2 hours or more. Guard the process anyway. When the mixture keeps itself erected give shape to it with an old paint brush. We can use heated palstic for "hang up" the mixture.

Drying mixture.

With the mixture totally dried we make 3 steps using an old paint brush:

-White foam "seams" using a mixture of Vallejo's Water Texture with White Acrilyc paint (30%, 40%).

-Transparent water using pure Water Texture.

-Foam on splatters crests.

Foam

We get foam mixing bicarbonateof soda with Water texture. If you want a denser foam tehn use more bicarb, but this mixture is harder to apply and manipulate with the paint brush. Some 40% Water Texture and 60% bicarb is a good proportion for the initial attempt.

If the mixture dry, try to remove it before adding more Water Texture. It will get wet.

We add some White Acrilyc paint to avoid the mixture get yellowish.

Splashes

We use Vallejo's Water Texture and transparent plastic sheet (p.e. cigarettes packet) as a stencil.

Cut the plastic with the desied shape and "paint" it with Water Texture. When dry, Water texture reduces his thickness a lot, and will curve the plastic sheet. This could be useful if you want a curved splash.

Finished splashes.

In large splashes we can fix one end to the vehicle and the other end to the river, and then apply Water Texture.

As in splatters, finally apply White Acrilyc paint "seams", foam on edges... on the splash.

Water trickles were made with stretched out heated transparent plastic (as a radio aerial).

Summary: water effects combination on/in tracks' splashes

1) Pure Water Texture layer in tracks.

2) Make some splatters and splashes and glue them upon previus Water Texture layer.

3) Blend it with more Water Texture, fill in the gaps...  Water Texture can be moulded, stretched out... with some practice with the paint brush.

4) Some White Acrilyc paint "seams".

5) Foam in/on the edges, foam "seams"...

... and some peaceful practice!!!

Waterline mask.

Aply the waterline mask after all the weathering effects, except dusting.

Draw the waterline on/in adhesive tape and cut it carefully. Both parts will be used.

First we paint the wet side: place the upper mask and airbrush a black thin mixture (5%black paint, as a fliter), darkening the wet side.

Second the lower mask, using the upper as a guide. Remove the upper mask.

Then, apply the dust, with pigments or airbrushing.

RIVER STONES

We get river stones using lentils. We choose a small variant: "pardina" lentils (or other littles ones). You can use them directly in the diorama or make a silicone mould.

AGUA CANTOS RODADOS WEB

Extend a white tail thick layer and sprinkle the lentils on it. Fit the lentils over the white tail.

Let it dry and remove the excess.

Paint the river stones with light grey, a dark wash and drybrushing wiht light grey or cream paint.

SOLDIERS AND ARMAMENT

Soldiers came from a mix of differents kits: IDF Tank Crew (HS_002) MENG, British Tank Riders (35118) Miniart, Soviet Paratroopers Afghanistan (3619) Zvezda, and heads and hands from Verlinden.

We couldn't get english armament, so we choosed arm then with captured STG-44/70.
