Friendly Fire Identification Marks |
Friendly Fire identification marks are used by all alliances, due to the employ of captured enemy material and the SCR from secondary countries. These identifying marks are used discontinuously, especially when air superiority is achieve. Use and design is decided at local level (division, corps ...). There are different identification marks: -National flag on the vehicle. -Brightly colored canvas tied on the vehicle. -Painted marks on the vehicle. Different marks painted on turret roof, and occasionally in the glacis front or gun mantlet. Paints were mixed with water to facilitate their removal, due to Friendly Fire Identification Marks temporary nature. This causes marks quickly chipping. Schemes were innumerables. Examples:
-Metal plates around the barrel: all kinds of metal plates (painted, unpainted, rusty ...) bent around the barrel, holding them with rivets, nuts or "stitched" with wire to identify silhouette. Rectangular shaped plates, sawn shaped plates, battlement shaped plates, curved shaped plates ... were employed. Assembly diagram: Examples:
